The Swingin Seniors Square Dance Club was started in 1982 when Opal Stone and Lucille Baker approached Red Porter about starting a morning square dance club. Red, whose life was square dancing, agreed to call if they could find a suitable place to dance. That was a green light for these two dedicated dancers. They followed all leads, searching for a facility that would suit their needs.

They ended up at the Madison Jobe Senior Center and presented their program. They were welcomed with open arms and thus the Swingin Seniors Square Dance Club was formed. Red was the caller assisted by M.K. Kopp and Jim King. Opal was President and served in that position until July of 1985.

The club performed at nursing homes twice a month as well as at other community events. When we no longer had a club caller, we tried to continue by dancing to records, which was unsuccessful.

On June 2, 1994, Madison Jobe closed for renovation. The little family of square dancers held together by meeting each Tuesday for lunch. When it reopened, in October of 1994, we were delighted to start back dancing in a lovely new place.

After Reds death in 1994, M.K. Kopp became the club caller. When his health began to fail, we tried dancing to records. We were determined to stay together.

In 1998, Charlie and Glora DeValcourt were taking square dance lessons and started visiting the club. Their teacher was Bob Baier. Charlie asked Bob if hed come to our club and call a dance. He told Bob about the club and found out Red and Mary had known Bob since he was a small child. Bob called our Christmas dance and has been a guest caller ever since.

Thus became the start of guest callers. Connie Goff joined our club in 1996. She and her husband, Rick, were callers and once had their own club. As special treats, she would ask callers to come and call for us and the club began to grow. Connie now holds the position of Program Director and has callers lined up more than a year ahead. The callers donate their time and experience, providing many hours of good dancing and fun. Some callers swear they have more fun than we do.
